Chapter 15

Crowding Wolf until I could tuck my toes against his feet, I wrapped a hand on his bicep to keep my balance, trying to ignore the expanse of naked male skin so temptingly close. Despite the fact he wasn’t wearing a shirt he radiated enough heat to double as a space heater. How was he not cold?

Reeling my wandering, libido-directed mind back into focus, I watched him rearrange the four photos trying to see what he saw.

He handed me back all of the photos but the four on the railing.

I leaned in, studying the remaining pictures. There were numbers lining the edge, but no matter how he arranged them, they didn’t make sense. “I don’t get it. What are those?”

“A lead.”

His answer sent my pulse into overdrive, and my fingers tightened on his arm before I could stop myself. Excitement made me grin.

He caught it and grinned back. Picking up the photos, he turned and curled an arm around my waist, pulling me in close. “Time to go inside. You’re toes are turning into ice cubes.” He looked around the porch. “Where are your shoes?”

“Over there.” I nodded toward the post where I left my slip-ons.

He nudged me towards them. “Put them on and we’ll go back to your villa.”

As much as I wanted to go to my actual room and not my temporary space, I knew it wasn’t worth mentioning. No way would he let us stay in the house while the bullet holes were still fresh. Not to mention the fact I still hadn’t gotten a chance to clean up or replace the lock from the last break-in.

Sighing, I got my shoes on. When he held out his hand, I took it and let him lead the way to Pequeña Estrella.

Once inside, he flipped on the light in the living room, headed for the small coffee table, and sat on the floor.

Wanting to see, I went to the other side and sat, using the couch to brace my back.

He laid the four photos out in a straight line. “First, are all of these of the same place?”

Leaning over the table, I pulled them toward me, and turned them so I wasn’t looking at them upside down. It took me a few minutes of wracking my brain for memories of our trip before I could put it together. “Yep. They’re all from Rhyolite.”

“How far away is that from here?”

I shrugged. “I think it’s about two and half, maybe three hours up US 95.”

“We’ll need to get an early start on tomorrow’s road trip then.” He slid the pictures back to his side. “Do you have a piece of paper and pen?”

I got up, leaving the warmth of my blanket behind on the floor and hit the kitchen. Digging through the junk drawer, I found a pen and the back of a takeout menu when he added, “And a flashlight?”

That took a bit more hunting, but I found one in the cabinet with the coffee. Why it was there was beyond me.
